The Hour the Fountain House Opens

Historical reconstruction. At first light, a caretaker clears a shallow channel and releases water through the fountain house as carriers begin to arrive from the street. The exact opening ritual and people are invented. The mechanism makes a broader truth visible: public water depended on built routes and repeated work—wells, basins, terracotta pipes, stone drains, thresholds, cleaning, and controlled access. A fountain house was both architecture and daily service, with shade and circulation affecting who could collect water and when.
