Color That Had to Be Repaired

Historical reconstruction. A craft worker tests fresh blue and iron-red paint against a weathered plaster band before repairing the larger wall. The scene is imaginative, but its central point is secure: Greek stone and architectural surfaces did not begin and remain uniformly white. Pigments, binders, plaster, exposure, abrasion, and repeated human attention shaped how color appeared over time. This worker’s swatch makes maintenance visible rather than presenting polychromy as a permanent decorative filter. From the evidence: the exact building, palette, tools, and person are reconstructed; surviving traces and experimental study establish that ancient surfaces carried layered color.
