The Legend of El Ghriba

On Djerba, people still whisper about a solitary woman called El Ghriba.

El Ghriba lived in a clay hut on the future holy ground, where her evening lamp pushed back the salt wind.

That same glow reaches farther back, to priests fleeing Jerusalem with a sacred stone from the ruined Temple.

Some say the stone became the synagogue's foundation, tying exile to memory with something solid enough to touch.

Fire swallowed the hut of El Ghriba one night, and neighbors ran toward it with robes pressed over their faces.
