The Fairy Flag: A Gift That Could Not Keep Her

The wrong miracle

At the bridge, she gave him a way to win battles. He wanted a way to keep her.

A borrowed year

She was a fairy. He was a MacLeod chief. Their marriage had been allowed one year and a day.

The last morning

The last morning came. She walked with him to the bridge, then stopped where the road divided.

Almost nothing

She unfolded a piece of silk. It weighed almost nothing in the wind.

A people protected

“When your people face defeat, raise this. Help will come.”

Three chances only

“Three times,” she told him. “No more.” He folded it carefully, as though a crease could lose a victory.

Two directions

He could carry the silk home. He could not carry her.

One more question

He looked down at the gift. “And if I raise it now?”

The folded answer

She laid her hand over his. The silk stayed folded.

What he releases

He loosened his fingers. She stepped away.

The gift remains

At the castle, he placed the silk where she used to sit.

Silk and a story

The silk covered the seat. The room was still empty.
