The Jar That Decides the Winter

Historically grounded original fiction. A household worker touches a cool plaster wall before deciding where to place a large sealed jar for the damp season. The person, room, and choice are invented, but the trade-off is concrete: a container must stay dry and inspectable without blocking movement or crowding the work of the household. Ceramic vessels, shelves, raised surfaces, fibers, smoke, dust, and ventilation all belonged to the material problem of keeping supplies usable. The image leaves the contents and the worker’s status uncertain rather than turning one arrangement into a universal Greek home.
