7 Chapter 1 Population Sindh is the second largest province of Pakistan in terms of population. Topographically Sindh province can be divided into four main geographical parts. Kirthar range on the west a central alluvial plain bisected by the Indus river in middle, a desert belt in the east and Indus delta in the south. This chapter provides the detail information about population dynamics, population growth & density, total area, dependency ratio, marital status and distribution of population by gender and economic activity. Population Size and Growth According to the 7th Population and Housing Census, 2023, the total population of Sindh is counted as 55.70 million including headcount population population with detailed characteristics is 55.64 million which suggests an Inter Censual increase of 16.38% during the period of 2017 to 2023. Therefore, average annual growth rate is observed to be 2.57% between the period of 2017 to 2023; which is much higher than previous growth rate of 2.41%, indicating rapid growth rate, see table 1.1 for detail. 8 Division Wise Population Distribution & District Wise Population Pyramids
Karachi Division has the largest population share (36.60%) among six (6) Administrative Divisions in Sindh. Second largest division is Hyderabad with 20.93% share, followed by Larkana 12.7 4%, Sukkur 10.79%, Shaheed Benazirabad 10.65%, and Mirpur khas 8.29 % share (Table1.02) Census 2023. Stratified analysis by districts suggests that highest growth is observed in Karachi East District in Sindh with 5.32% average annual growth rate, followed by Karachi South 4.71%, and Karachi West District 4.35%. Lowest growth however, is observed in Tando Muhammad Khan 1.18%, followed by Ghotki 1.22% and Sujawal District 1.25%. Population pyramids for fiveyear age cohorts are also given at the beginning of this chapter under key finding of Sindh population. Ov erall Karachi East pyramid in 2017 was moving toward the shape of stationary population, however, in six years it started to look like typical pyramid again, which alludes to high growth rate (5.32%). Further analysis gives more insights, f or example, majority of 04 age group population in 2017 would be in age group 59 years by 2023. Data suggest that there were 323,085 kids in the 0 4 age group in 2017, however, by 2023, 438,144 kids were enumerated in this age bracket, over 115 thousand more kids found in this age group . This trend was observed up to the age 54. The population increase could be attributed to in migration or to better coverage. As far as districts with lowest growth rates are concerned their shape remained more or less similar for both C ensuses, see population pyramids of Sujawal, Tharparkar and Umer Kot Districts.
Urban Rural Population Rapid urbanization is one of the inevitable outcomes of the demographic transition. Currently, urban population is 30.06 million (53.97%) whereas rural population is 25.639 million (46.03%). Over the years, Sindh has witnessed urbanization; figure 1. 3 shows data from 1951 to 2023. It can be observed that from 1951 to 1981 rural population was higher than urban but from 1998 this gap start ed to shrink and in 2017 urban area population surpassed rural population. The result also reveals that share of urban population indicating increased trend of migration of rural population to urban areas for getting better jobs, education and health facilities.

Karachi central district is the most populated area having a population density of 55,396.01 persons per square kilometer followed by Korangi and Karachi East districts with 28,971.95 and 28,213.97 persons, respectively. Tharparkar district is the least densely populated district with a population density of 90.56 per square kilometer as per Census 2023.
