At the velvet rail, Mara watched the Sky-Lift carry shareholders past her toward the Sun Terrace.

At the end of her shift, Mara pressed her jeweled Comm-Pin and chose one forbidden sunset.

The Velvet Rail

The jeweled Comm-Pin flashed green as the Sky-Lift doors parted, and Mara slipped inside before the scanners blinked awake.

Brass walls climbed around Mara's reflection while the city fell away in stacked windows and thin orange light.

Then the Sky-Lift stopped at the Sun Terrace, and silence hit harder than applause.

Stolen Ascent

That silence made every leaf look staged under a sunset too perfect to be real.

Mara touched a glowing rose, and the whole garden rippled like water over steel grating.

The Sun Terrace flickered off, exposing ducts, projector ribs, and a black stone stair sinking below the roof.

False Garden

The cold wind lifted the loose hairs at Mara's neck.

Mara's jeweled Comm-Pin answered with a low chime, as if the dark below had called first.

Far above the sleeping city, Mara stepped toward the buried glow, and the fake sunset finally looked afraid.
