In London, innovative Webb Patent Sewer Gas Lamps—famously known as 'farting lamps'—were created in the 1890s by Joseph Webb to burn sewer methane and prevent explosions. A small dome collected methane which, combined with town gas, fueled a perpetual flame that lit streets, ventilated miles of sewers, and today one restored lamp stands on Carting Lane near the Savoy Hotel.
