In one Apollo 14 sample, scientists found zircon grains that looked more like Earth than Moon. Researchers then checked how the grains formed, measuring pressure, temperature, and oxygen conditions that matched Earth’s crust far better than the Moon’s usual environment. To prove a rock’s story, they compare its mineralogy, chemistry, and isotopes with Apollo samples, because Moon rocks preserve a record that Earth has mostly erased.
