Colapesce: The Guardian of Sicily

Every dawn, Cola slipped from the black rocks and vanished into water so deep the village whispered prayers.

His strange gift traveled faster than gulls, until even King Frederick the Second demanded proof.

Called by Water

Proof sank with a silver cup, and Cola cut through the dark after it.

He rose smiling with the cup in one hand, salt shining on his lashes as the court forgot to breathe.

A crown followed, and again the sea returned him before the last ripple faded.

Then a small ring flashed in the sun and dropped where daylight could not go.

The King's Tests

That last glint pulled Cola past the blue he knew and into water black as iron.

Far below, three giant stone columns held Sicily, and one burned open with volcanic fire.

When Cola touched the broken pillar, the whole seabed answered with a low shudder.

Beneath the Last Light

That tremor told Cola what no king above the waves could ever understand.

He stayed below, shoulder against stone, and Sicily kept breathing above him.

Every earthquake near Sicily is Cola changing shoulders.
