The Ladybird’s Marian Names

Down into the Iron Mines of Persberg

Transcripció

At Persberg in Sweden, the mine opens below you as a yawning abyss. The descent begins in buckets, lowered into the darkness. Dampness marks the passage downward. The opening above recedes, while the workings extend below on a scale difficult to take in. Step by step, the equipment and the depth make the method visible: access is not by a broad road or a level entrance, but by suspended buckets entering a confined and dangerous space. The passage presents the mine through what can be observed on the descent: the wet underground environment, the void beneath the surface, and the great extent of the workings. Nothing is made comfortable or ornamental. The bucket is both conveyance and necessity, carrying people into the mine and back out again. This descent reveals nineteenth-century extraction as a direct encounter with depth, dampness, and danger. Before the ore could be brought upward, workers and equipment had first to enter the earth by this precarious route.
