23 Chapter - 2 Housing
This chapter presents information about housing facilities such as sources of household drinking water, number of rooms, distribution of housing units by tenure, period of construction of owned housing unit, sources of fuel availability for cooking purposes and sources of lighting.
Household Population and Composition
A household means a group of persons living together who have collective arrangements
for cooking/eating. A person living alone was also considered to constitute a household. The distinguishing
characteristics of a household are its common cooking arrangements.
Household Tenure
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa majority of households are living in owned housing units. The
share of owned housing unit in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is 83.05%, rented units are 11.48% and remaining
5.47%, are rent free housing units. Comparative census results reveal that the proportion of owned housing
unit increased from 80.61% in census 1998 to 83.05% in Census 2017. The rent free housing units have
decreased from 10.88% in Census 1998 to 5.47% in Census 2017. Further, it has been observed that
share of rented units is higher in big cities and in urban areas. For example, in Peshawar 29.01%
households are living in rented units. Moreover, in Bannu 43.23% are living in rented units in urban areas,
which is over seven (7) times higher as compared to rural areas of Bannu which is estimated as 5.52%.
This trend is found to be consistent for all districts in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, see table 2.01.

Housing Units by Lighting Facility
According to Census 2017, electricity is the major source of lighting in Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa. In Census 1998, 72.19% of the housing units had reported electricity facility which increased
to 89.89% in Census 2017, registering an increase of nearly 18% points between two periods. Housing
units‟ use of kerosene oil has dropped drastically from 24.51% in 1998 to only 1.12% in 2017. Further
comparison also reveals that electricity as source of lighting facility has also improved in rural areas from
67.47% in Census 1998 to 87.92% in Census 2017. Abbottabad and Haripur are in close proximity and top
users of electricity as main source of lighting. To be specific, 98.43% households in Abbottabad are using
electricity for lighting followed by Haripur 97.13%, Malakand 96.80%, Mardan 96.70% etc. In contrast, in
district Torgar only 32.70% and in Kohistan 57.04% use this facility and found to be at bottom of the list,
see table 2.05. It is interesting to note that some households have started using gas lamps, which could be
attributed to load shedding or availability of gas in new areas (Table 2.2).
