Vaccine research in 2024: COVID-19 protection and mRNA platforms

This overview covers two developments reported in 2024. It is a historical research summary, not a list of the newest vaccines or current vaccination recommendations.

Understanding protection against severe COVID-19. In May 2024, Oxford researchers reported how people vaccinated with ChAdOx1 responded to later SARS-CoV-2 infection. Their analysis linked vaccination to reduced harmful inflammatory responses and fewer infection-related changes in blood-cell populations. It examined how protection works, rather than announcing a new vaccine approval.^[1]

The mRNA platform. UKHSA’s March 2024 explainer described how mRNA supplies instructions for cells to make a protein that prompts an immune response; those instructions are then broken down. It also discussed research into further applications, including cancer, and the UK’s partnership with Moderna for research and manufacturing. Research into an application is not the same as a licensed product for that use.^[2]
