The celebrated Inch Cape, more familiarly known as the Bell Rock, was unmarked by lighthouse or beacon of any kind at the beginning of the 19th century[1]. As a result, it was the terror of mariners making for the firths of Forth and Tay[1].

Also, there was the danger of mistaking the Dornoch Firth for the Moray, as it lies only a short way to the north of the latter[1].
