The first barrack on Skerryvore Rock was destroyed during a gale[1]. It was supposed that the heavy sea of the 3d November caused the destruction[1]. According to a letter from Mr. Hogben, 'the Rock was pretty clearly seen, but no trace of the barrack'[1].
The letter also notes, 'From the circumstance of the yard of a large vessel, and also a piece of a boom, having come ashore in the direction of the Rock, we think it is not improbable that some wreck has happened, and that some part of it has been thrown upon the barrack by the force of the sea'[1].
