In April 1859, Gosse offered his Pagurus prideauxii a larger Natica shell. He watched it inspect and drag the shell, left for about an hour, and returned to find the crab and Adamsia anemone in the new home. He later observed a small attachment to the crab and inferred a transfer mechanism, but did not witness the transfer itself.[[cite:4]]
