What happens when sunlight hurts a man who has never seen it?

On a fog soaked San Francisco morning, Rhamda Avec stepped off the ferry with a red leather case and eyes that made strangers stare twice.

He bought his first cigarette like a scholar studying fire, and the smoke halted him with pure wonder.

Detective Albert Jerome watched him face the sunrise, flinch like a child, then smile like someone remembering a lost home.

When Rhamda asked for Dr. Holcomb, Jerome stopped joking and escorted him across the bay.

By the time they reached Berkeley, the professor greeted him like an expected miracle, and Chatterton Place was waiting.

The Man in the Fog

That waiting house answered with a deeper silence.

Dr. Holcomb had promised a lecture that would turn the occult into fact, and every seat was taken before noon.

Jerome watched Rhamda lead the professor inside number 288, then heard a silver bell ring out of an empty room.

An old woman clutched his sleeve, whispered, "Now there are two," and crumpled to the floor.

By nightfall the failed lecture had become a dark legend, and San Francisco gave the impossible a lasting name, the Blind Spot.

Harry Wendel and Hobart Fenton followed it into the same house, where a dying Chick Watson pressed a blue ring into Harry's hand.

When fire touched the stone, Dr. Holcomb appeared alive inside it, small as a prayer and just as impossible.

Then Watson vanished, and the bell came back loud and holy.

At last Hobart found the hidden pattern, reopened the Blind Spot, and watched space fold back like a lifted curtain.

For one long held breath, Harry saw another world beside his own, and the lost professor seemed farther away, not gone, not broken.
