What happens after sunset?

Ra steps into the western glow, and the solar barque slips beneath the horizon like a gold breath going underwater.

Behind him, daylight seals shut, and ahead the Duat opens with black rivers, fire gates, and walls carved with staring faces.

Protective spirits wait along the banks while heat from the gates shivers across the hull.

Silent gods brace at the oars.

Torchlight flashes across Set&#x27;s blade, but even he keeps his eyes on the water.

The sun disk above Ra burns smaller and redder while the current pulls the boat through caverns that seem to inhale.

Every ripple carries one warning toward the dark ahead.

That warning becomes silence as the Duat river goes suddenly still.

Oars freeze in the air, and the lamps along the deck bend low as if the dark has learned to breathe.

From a split in the water, Apep rises in endless coils, blotting stars from the underworld ceiling with scales like wet stone.

The solar barque shudders once, then stops, trapped inside a living knot that tightens around the mast.

Set plants his feet at the bow, spear steady, while Ra stands at the prow and the red light hardens on his face.

Then Apep opens a tunnel of darkness, and the sun seems small enough to swallow.

The darkness folds over the deck, and every god grips the rail as the boat tilts toward Apep&#x27;s open jaws.

Set presses forward through the sliding coils, not to destroy the serpent, but to force one narrow path back into the river.

For one breath, the sun disappears inside Apep&#x27;s coils.

Then a flare breaks out between the scales, and the knot loosens just enough for the barque to lurch free.

Apep sinks back into the black water, undefeated, while the crew leans into the oars with smoke on their hands.

When dawn lifts over the horizon, Ra rises with it, and the first light feels earned by everyone still breathing.
