The observatory for a missing sky

Hundreds of smooth apertures pierce an immense coral cliff, each isolating a precisely bounded patch of night sky. Surveyors first read the structure as an observatory for a constellation that had drifted out of recognition. Yet one central shaft still holds a bright present-day star, while its stonework is the same age as the rest. Either the instrument was realigned without rebuilding, or the site’s chronology is wrong.
