Overview of Google's Book Digitization Project and Legal Challenges

Google initiated a project to digitize books from libraries, which began in 2002. By 2004, it had scanned about 25 million books. However, this project faced significant legal challenges, particularly from authors and publishers, leading to a prolonged lawsuit that concluded with Google winning on fair use grounds in 2016. Despite the legal victory, comprehensive access to the digitized books remains restricted, with many still not available for public reading[1][2][3].

The project has partially contributed to the creation of the HathiTrust Digital Library, but as of now, a vast database of scanned books is largely dormant, accessible only to a few Google engineers[1][2][4].
