One-minute myth-buster: Are electric cars dirtier than diesel?

Transcript

Welcome to our one-minute myth buster. Today we answer the question: Are electric cars dirtier than diesel? Although making an electric vehicle uses more energy for battery production, studies show that over its lifetime an electric car produces far fewer carbon emissions than a comparable diesel vehicle. The extra emissions from manufacturing are quickly offset by the zero tailpipe emissions during driving, with most research indicating that the initial carbon debt is repaid in just a couple of years. Even when charged using fossil fuel heavy electricity, the overall benefits become clear as the car is driven more. In addition, as power grids become greener and battery technology continues to improve, the lifetime emissions gap widens even more in favor of electric cars. Simply put, electric cars are a key part of moving toward a cleaner future.
