How do lightning bugs produce light?

Transcript

Lightning bugs, or fireflies, produce light through a chemical reaction known as bioluminescence. This process occurs in specialized light organs in their abdomens, where the enzyme luciferase facilitates the reaction between luciferin, oxygen, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). When oxygen is available, the light organ glows; when it isn't, the light fades away, allowing fireflies to control their flashing patterns for communication and mating purposes.
