Grown inside a shell

  1. A sculpture grown by a shellfish.

    These little Buddhas have a surface of pearl. A living mussel made it.

  2. First, a tiny shaped insert.

    The insert goes against the inner shell, beneath the mantle: the animal’s soft tissue.

  3. Then, layer after layer.

    The mantle deposits nacre over the insert. Its shape stays; its surface becomes pearl.

  4. People shaped it. Life finished it.

    This craft was practised in China by the 13th century. The pearl surface grew around a human idea.
