The Washington family in Galveston’s storm records

Records let us sketch who the Washington family were, where they lived, and whom a victim list counted among the dead, but they do not resolve every family member’s fate.

  1. Names and household: The victim index records John Washington, “Mrs. Washington,” and four children as storm decedents. The History Center article identifies Mrs. Washington as Lillie and, using the 1900 census, names five living children: Tillie, Clarance, Genevia, Verneta, and Carrol. The index’s four children and the census account’s five are not reconciled.[1][2]
  2. Place: The census account places the household at 4416 Avenue T 1/2 in Ward 7, near the shoreline; the article describes Ward 7 as almost completely destroyed, with heavy loss of life. John is described as a longshoreman in the census account, while a city directory identified him as a hack driver at 1111 Rosenberg, an earlier listed address.[3][4]
  3. Clarance’s possible survival: The article says Clarance appears to have been the only family member to survive. It points to a 1903–04 directory entry for a Clarence Washington, yardman, at 3224 Broadway, but treats this as evidence consistent with survival, not conclusive identification.[5]

What remains unknown: The records do not settle why the victim index names four children when the census account names five, nor do they establish every family member’s fate or conclusively prove that the later directory entry is Clarance. Storm-victim lists could be incomplete, inaccurate, ambiguous, or conflicting, so these details support careful inference, not an imagined account of the family’s experience.[6][7][8]
