What lies beneath the rails? A cutaway from train to trackbed

Portrait cutaway illustration of a railway segment with one train above exposed rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage layers, signalling cables and a maintenance worker, rendered in a warm editorial ink-and-gouache style.

A research-led cutaway of a generic railway segment, showing how the train is supported and guided above sleepers, ballast and subgrade, while drainage, signalling infrastructure and maintenance access work around it. Materials and construction details vary by railway system.
