The robin’s nest sits inside the opening of a discarded watering can. This is a detail from the original four-photo plate.

Look into the pot’s open mouth, low in the image: a robin built its nest inside. Branches partly obscure the old pot.

The nest occupies the dark central opening of a cart-wheel hub. The wheel itself supplies the shelter.

The robin’s nest rests among the cart’s timbers, above the wheel. Kearton reports that the birds in all four pictured homes raised their young safely.
