The architecture hidden beneath bark

The branching pattern belongs to the Scolytus bark beetle. Wood describes larval feeding tunnels radiating from a central passage and widening as their occupants grow. The pattern records excavation and feeding, rather than a woven nest.

Find the oval structure at upper right: the Rhagium beetle’s cocoon. Before pupation, the larva assembles long woody fibres in a hollow, usually in the bark. Here wood becomes the covering for a pupal chamber. The other nests in this composite plate belong to bees.

The same material can be eaten into passages or assembled into a cocoon. Wood’s two beetle examples reveal different structures, made at different stages for different purposes. From Homes Without Hands, physical PDF pages 195–196 and 202–203. Colour remasters are artistic interpretations of the book plates.
