A home you can carry

Wood’s caddis plate collects cases made with sticks, sand and shells. In the portable examples, the larva’s front emerges to move while its softer body stays within the case. The assortment shows different constructions, not a single design used by every caddis larva.

Look to the left-hand tree for the house-builder moth, Oiketicus: Wood describes its caterpillar carrying a case of scraps of wood and leaf. The large flying Atlas moth and oval cocoons on the right are separate examples. Similar portable shelter, different habitat and materials.

A larva can take its shelter along for the journey. Compare the river’s patchwork cases with a caterpillar’s wood-and-leaf covering on land. Both accounts and plates come from J. G. Wood’s Homes Without Hands, physical PDF pages 308–311 and 410–414. Colour remasters are modern artistic interpretations.
