One roof, many front doors

The sociable weavers’ great grass roof shelters a collection of distinct nests beneath it. Look for the separate openings along the underside. Wood distinguishes the common covering from the nests it protects: one roof does not mean one shared room.

In the African-weaver plate, separate woven nests hang from their supports. Each suspended form has its own attachment. Compare this arrangement with nests grouped beneath a common roof; they are different construction types, not a rule for all weavers.

Count the entrances, then look at what holds the nests. A shared covering and a collection of hanging homes make very different use of a tree. From J. G. Wood’s Homes Without Hands, physical PDF pages 227–229 and 446–448. Both plates are interpretive colour remasters.
