The Last Elevator to the Sun Terrace

Admission not included
Mara sold sunsets for a living. She had never been allowed to see one.
One forbidden ride
At the end of her night shift, the last guests left the Sun Terrace. Mara stepped into the empty lift.
Too perfect
Upstairs, a perfect orange sun hung over roses. No wind. No insects. Not one fallen petal.
The price of a picture
She touched a rose. Its colour broke into squares. Behind the sunset, a cooling fan rattled.
Something real
A service door stood behind the flowers. Cold air slipped beneath it. Mara opened it and found stairs.
Before the sun
The stairs ended on the roof. Above the machinery, the real sky was dark blue. At its edge, one thin line was turning gold.
The cost of staying
Her pin chimed. “Return now, or surrender your badge.” She looked at the horizon, then at the empty stairs.
A different kind of service
Down below, the cleaners were finishing. Mara returned to the lift and held its doors open.
No ticket required
“Is this allowed?” one asked. Mara shook her head. Then she stepped aside.
Follow the cold air
They followed her up the service stairs. Behind them, the pin kept chiming. Ahead, the roof grew light.
Their first dawn
The first sunlight touched their faces. Nobody spoke. Nobody reached for a ticket.
Off duty
Mara unclipped the pin and set it on the roof. For once, she had nothing to sell. She stayed to watch.
