Chapter-3
Agriculture
Agriculture is still the largest sector of the economy of Pakistan in terms of labour participation and
as such livelihood of the majority of the population directly or indirectly depends on it. It is major contributor
to the employment and foreign exchang e earnings. In addition to that, it provides industrial raw material,
hence growth in this sector has multiple linkages with overall economy.
Land Utilization
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has 8,367 thousand hectares area out of which 1 ,853 thousand hectares i s
reported as cultivated area and 6,514 thousand hectares is reported as uncultivated area in 2020-21. The
net area sown during 2020-21 was 1,220 thousand hectares of total cultivated area. Trend analysis of data
indicates that the area sown more than once is s lightly increas ed since 20 17-18 (KP Development
Statistics). The share of “Area sown more than once” was about 3 2% of total cropped area during 2020 -21
whereas in 2008-09 it was estimated to be 30%.

The largest segment of the cultivated area 761.8 thousand hectares went to wheat crop during 20 20-21 followed by Maize 460.7 thousand hectares, Sugarcane 107.4 thousand hectares, Rice 64.9 thousand hectares, Tobacco 27.9 thousand hectares, Gram 23.2 thousand hectares and Barley 20.9 thousand hectares (Table 3.04).

Major production clusters of wheat exist in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to large
cultivation areas available in those larger districts. Dera Ismail Khan is the largest wheat producing district
contributing 11.3% of province's total production. It is followed by Sawat and Charsada that accounted for
8.6% and 6.9% share respectively (Table 3.07) . For maize, Sawat is the largest district that supplied
13.23% of the province's total maize production in 20 20-21 (Table 3.16). Mansehra and Buner were the
next two largest maize producing districts accounting for 10.7% and 8.3 % shares of the total maize
production of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Charsadda, D.I Khan and Mardan are the first, second and third largest
sugarcane producing districts accounting for 32.1%, 26.5% and 22.7% share respectively of the pr ovincial
sugarcane production in 2020-21 (Table 3.13). In 2020-21 largest production clusters of Jowar is in district
D.I Khan (Table 3.22), whereas Barley are produced in the large quantities in districts Chitral and Bajur
respectively (Table 3.24).
Sawabi is the largest tobacco producing district accounting for 53.8% of province's total production
in 2020-21, it was followed by Mardan and Charsadda as the second and third largest tobacco producing
districts, respectively-holding 22.7% and 13.7% shares of total provincial production (Table 3.31). For bajra,
Dera Ismail Khan is the largest district that contributed 41.8% of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa‟s total production
in 2020 -21 (Table 3.37) . It was followed by Charsadda which accounted for 29% share of total bajra
production in the province. The crop experienced significant increase in area under cultivation and yield. It
might be achieved due to favorable weather conditions, better management, timely availability of quality
inputs and higher economic returns. Dera Ismail Khan was the largest rice producing district (Table 3.10),
moreover it was also among the largest producer of G ram, Rapeseed & Mustered (Table 3.19 & Table
3.28). Thus, Dera Ismail Khan held the largest share in the total provincial production.
