144 Chapter-4 Education This section explores annual data relating to student enrolment and number of teaching staff of educational institutions, as well as literacy rat es. Education play s a vital role for social mobilization of household and the formation of developed society. It helps to improve the in dividual skills and capabilities moreover, it also set s a path for the better future. Data relating to education is essential for monitoring the progress of the economic growth, living standards, and progress of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) . SDG 4 calls for ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, which is indeed a critical goal and considered as a key enabler under the SDGs framework. School education is imparted in two types of schools i.e. formal and non-formal. Formal schools include all institutions run by the Secondary Education Department (SED), as well as other organizations o f the provincial and federal governments within province. Non -formal schools or institutions are set up to give a second opportunity to children who have either missed schools or have been dropped out of them. Education data covers the following areas:-

 Primary School is an institution comprising first to five grades of educational system.
 Middle School is an institution comprising first to eight grades of educational system.
 High School is an institution comprising first to ten grades of educational system.
 Higher Secondary School is an institution comprising first to twelve grades of educational system.
 Intermediate College is an institution comprising of F.Sc./F.A/ICS of educational system.
 Degree College is an institution comprising of B.Sc./B.A/B.Com etc. of educational system.
 Result Statistics: Data regarding number of candidates appeared/passed by sex for matriculation and intermediate level has also been collected with the help of Boards of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE).

Article 25-A of the Constitution of Pakistan1973 1 states that, “The State shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age of five to sixteen years in such manner as may be determined by law”. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa , The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Free and Compulsory Primary/Secondary Education Act, 201 7 was enacted to be compliant with the constitutional provision for ensuring access to free and compulsory education 2. The Government of Pakistan has also ratified the implementation of SDGs 2030 in part icular SDG -4 which envisions to “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” as discussed already.

145 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa represents 14.69% of Pakistan‟s total population. Out of total 30.51 million population of KP, 10 million are the children between the ages 5 to 16 years, which accounts for nearly 30.6% of total population of KP3. According to the LFS-2020-21 total literacy rate in KP was 55.1% when disaggregated by gender it was found that literacy rate of male was 72.8% while for females it was 37.4%. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has the lower literacy rate as compared to Punjab and Sindh province.

Educational Institutions The number of male primary schools is reported as 16,079 in 2020-21 as compared to 14,770 in 2010-11 indicating annual growth rate of 8.86%. Similarly numbers of female primary schools have increased from 7,838 in 2010-11 to 10,546 in 2020-21, registering a positive annual growth of 2.73%. Middle schools for male are reported as 1,527 in 2010-11 which increased to 1,743 in 2020-21, while females middle school are reported to be 1,013 in 2010-11 compared with 1,386 in 2020-21, indicating 1.21% growth for males and 2.89% females which is a good sign. Nevertheless, much more schools are needed to cater the needs of the province and to reduce out of school children. High level schools for males are reported as 1,229 in 2010-11 which soared to 1,720 in 2020-21, while female high schools reported as 530 in 2010-11 has jumped to 921 in 2020-21, which shows an annual growth rate of nearly 5.14% between two the periods for female schools.
