Population
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is third largest province of Pakistan in terms of population. The
province falls into three main geographical divisions: Rugged mountainous regions in the North and West,
comparatively narrow strip of a plain, the plateau between the Indus in the East, and the hills in the West
and Indus region of the Hazara. This chapter provides the detail information about population trends,
gender disaggregation, growth, density, area, dependency ratio, marital status and distribution of
population by economic activity.
Population Size and Growth
According to the 6th Population and Housing Census, 2017, the population of Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa is recorded as 30.51 million which suggests an increase of 71.94% as compared to last
Census conducted in 1998. Thus, average annual growth rate has been reported as 2.9% during the
intercensal period of 1998 to 2017. Detail information about population and growth rate is given in table

Urban - Rural Population
Rapid urbanization is one of the foremost hallmarks of the demographic shift in Pakistan.
KP is also witnessing urbanization but it is not rapid as other parts of the country . This indicates that
situation is different in KP Province. Therefore, rural population (24.773 million) in KP is observed to be
much greater than the urban population (5.735 million) . As a result only a minor increase has been
observed in the urban population as compared to the previous census (Figure 1.3).
The urban population of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is counted as 5,735,428 in Census 2017, which is 18.80% of total population, while the share of rural population is 81.26%. Thus, share of rural population decreased by 2 % from 83% in Census 1998 to 81% in Census 2017.
Figure: 1.3 Percentage Share of Rural & Urban Population in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Growth Rate
Average annual growth rate was 2.4% in 1961 which peaked in 1981 with 3.4% growth
rate. It decreased to 2.8% in 1998, however in 2017 it rose to 2.9% showing a reverse trend d espite
Government‟s efforts to reduce fertility rate. According to National Institute of Population Studies population
(NIPS) projections, if this trend prevails Khyber Pakhtunkhwa population will cross 38.4 million mark by
2035.

Dependency Ratio
The distribution of the population by age, sex, and residence is a primary demographic
classification. It also provides information on trends on population growth based on the size of age
brackets, including dependency groups. According to census 2017, 43 percent of the population is under
the age of 15 and 3 percent is age 65 and above, with the bulk of the population falling in the 15-64 age
bracket. Therefore, the age dependency ratio (the sum of the population under age „15‟ and the population
age „65 and over‟ relative to the working-age population age “15-64”) is 88.34 percent. The dependency
ratio appears to be higher among males, and in rural areas (Table 1.03) for district wise figures refere to
table 1.06.
