Yuki-Onna: The Promise in the Snow

A breath of winter
The woman in white bent over the old woodcutter. Her breath shone in the dark. Beside him, Minokichi lay awake, unable to scream.
No way across
The storm had trapped them in the ferryman’s hut. Now Mosaku lay still. The woman turned toward the younger man.
One condition
“You are young. I’ll spare you. But tell anyone what you saw tonight, and I will kill you.”
What he kept
At dawn, Mosaku was dead. Minokichi survived the cold, and eventually returned to the forest. He told nobody about the woman.
The road home
A year later, he met a traveller on the road. Her name was O-Yuki. They walked home together, finding reasons to walk slowly.
Years beneath one roof
She stayed. They married. Years passed, and their house filled with children—ten in all. O-Yuki’s face never seemed to change.
The warmth she made
When their youngest kicked off a quilt, O-Yuki tucked it back around him. Minokichi watched from the doorway, smiling.
The lamp remembers
One night, with the children asleep, she sat sewing. Minokichi watched the lamplight move across her face. Something returned to him.
The question
“I once saw a woman who looked like you,” he said. O-Yuki kept her eyes on the needle. “Where?”
The promise breaks
He told her about the hut. The white breath. Mosaku. He had carried the secret for years. Now he gave it to his wife.
The same woman
The sewing fell from her hands. “It was me.” She stood over him. “You promised.”
A different silence
He could not move. O-Yuki looked toward the sleeping children. The house was so quiet he could hear their breathing.
For their sake
“For their sake, I’ll leave you alive. Care for them. If they suffer because of you, I will know.”
Through the smoke-hole
Her voice thinned into wind. Her body became white mist and rose through the roof. He never saw her again.
The promise that remained
Minokichi sat beside the abandoned sewing. Then he rose and tucked the quilt around a sleeping child.
