Initially, lighthouses relied on wood and coal fires, which provided very uncertain guides. Candles were introduced as illuminants towards the close of the seventeenth century. The evolution of illuminating apparatus was gradual, with significant advancements occurring in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The invention of the cylindrical wick-lamp by Argand in 1782 and the subsequent improvements in reflectors marked significant progress.
