The night the sea seemed brighter than the sky
In The Ocean World (1872), Captain Kingman of the Shooting Star described crossing water that looked at night like a vast field of snow. He also reported a dark horizon and unusually faint stars, making the milky water seem brighter than the sky. The edition associated luminous seas with living organisms, but that proposed explanation is distinct from Kingman’s account of what he saw.
