Sir Olof and the Myling

He rides the Red Mare toward St. Bryn Church, the Silver Ring warm in his palm.

A thin tune threads the Black Pine Forest, bright as frost on leaves.

Eve and the Song

That bright thread becomes voices and lanterns, as Elves ring the road.

Elves beckon him to dance, but Sir Olof bows, grips the Silver Ring, and refuses.

A curse leaves their lips like cold smoke, and his breath starts to rasp.

The Circle at Dusk

That cold rasp meets a thin wail from the ditch, where a Myling reaches up.

He lifts the Myling onto his back, and the small body grows heavier until his knees sink into mud.

Red Mare snorts and circles, while St. Bryn Church glows ahead, far as the moon.

The Ditch and the Cry

At St. Bryn Church gate, Sir Olof staggers past Elin, the Myling clutching his neck.

"Name me, and I will rest," the Myling whispers, eyes wide and wet.

Bells begin to toll, and the forest holds its breath again.

Somewhere in the trees, Elves listen, and Elin holds the latch still.
