Siphonophores: One Body, Many Specialists
0:00 0:00
Transcript
A siphonophore looks like one animal, but it is connected specialists called zooids, each with a job.
Some catch prey, others digest it, and nutrients spread through the colony.
Swimming zooids pulse water outward, giving the whole colony coordinated jet propulsion.
One species can reach 40 metres, longer than a blue whale, yet remain about as thick as a broomstick.
In deep water, its tentacles catch small prey, while blue light may attract prey or appear when startled.
At night, it travels upward to feed, then returns deeper by day.
