A coin, a circuit board and a thin prepared slide call for different setups. Celestron’s 2MP Handheld and MicroDirect models are designed for viewing surfaces and three-dimensional objects. Its 9-inch LCD Desktop is a compound microscope using illumination from below for thin specimens. Choose the kind of observation first. What to check before buying

The 2MP Handheld connects to a computer. MicroDirect can send live 1080p video to an HDMI display without a computer, but its Windows USB workflow is different and lists 720p video. The 9-inch model includes its own screen and a mechanical stage for slides. Check software requirements and display connections rather than assuming every digital microscope works with every phone or tablet. Useful detail depends on optics, lighting, stability and the subject—not just a large advertised digital magnification. Allow for slides or specimen preparation if you choose the compound model.
