Pandipedia entry
Blue Sky, Red Sunset
0:00 0:00
Transcript
Look up on a clear day, and the sky looks blue because blue light is scattered more than other colors by air molecules.
Sunlight carries a mix of colors, with shorter wavelengths appearing bluer and longer ones appearing redder.
At sunrise and sunset, sunlight crosses much more atmosphere, giving Rayleigh scattering a longer path to work on the light.
The shorter blue light gets scattered away, so the longer orange and red light dominates near the horizon.
