How Galileo worked around its antenna failure
Galileo was travelling to Jupiter when its high-gain antenna failed to deploy fully on 11 April 1991[1]. For the rest of the mission, it used its low-gain antenna instead; data-compression software and other strategies let it send more data through that antenna than had originally been possible[2]. Why it mattered: these measures kept data returning, but they did not restore the high-gain antenna, and Siddiqi says its failure prevented data transmission during the Gaspra flyby[3][4].
