Lumen: The Light That Kept Her
Forty years later
Lumen had buried his mother sixty years ago. Now she was running towards him. He was eight years old.
Two places at once
The man he had become stood on a shore beneath unfamiliar stars. Between the black rocks, arriving light showed him Paris.
An unfinished journey
His own last breath was behind him. But the light from this Paris had left Earth while his mother was still alive.
Only a witness
“You may watch,” the woman beside him said. “You cannot enter.” He scarcely heard her. His mother had reached the boy.
Her little repair
The child had fallen. Books lay scattered across the stones. On his sleeve was the red patch his mother had sewn over a tear.
The hand he missed
His mother knelt and caught his wrist. She turned it gently, looking for blood.
Cold stone
Lumen lifted his own hand to meet hers. His fingers touched cold rock. The picture did not change.
No message home
“Tell her I’m here.” The woman shook her head. “Nothing we say will reach that morning.”
Too late to warn
He wanted to warn her about the winter she would not survive. She was already gathering the boy into her arms.
What memory missed
“Did it hurt?” she asked. The boy nodded into her shawl. Lumen remembered the fall. He had forgotten how long she held him.
Letting the morning happen
His fingers slid from the cold rock. He stopped calling her name.
The repair holds
His mother brushed dust from the little green coat. The red patch held. They were ready to go.
Passing through
“And when they’re gone?” Lumen asked. “The light keeps travelling,” the woman said. “This is only where you meet it.”
A memory returned
His mother took the boy’s hand. Lumen watched them turn the corner. This time, he remembered the way she held it.
