“Exploding beetle” is catchy, but it is not quite right. The bombardier beetle does not carry TNT, and it does not literally detonate. Instead, it stores its reactants separately. When threatened, enzymes drive a chemical reaction. The beetle then fires a hot, irritating spray under pressure. So this is not a harmless little puff. It is a rapid chemical defense system, aimed at making predators reconsider their life choices. You may still hear an older story about an inhibitor and an anti-inhibitor controlling the blast. That explanation is outdated. The better picture is simpler: separate chemicals, enzyme-driven reaction, pressure, and a nasty spray.
