Trees that make waterproof primitive rope

Michael Steen explains how indigenous craftspeople gathered the inner bark of cedar, tulip poplar, and locust trees to manufacture durable cordage.

A demonstration of two-strand reverse twist cordage shows how opposing rotations lock fibers together by mechanical friction.

The Opposing Twist Technique Behind Handmade Rope

Grass cordage absorbs moisture, swells up, and decays quickly, requiring builders to reserve it for interior frames and use cedar bark outside.
