The dung beetle that follows the Milky Way

Phone-readable diagram of an African dung beetle and its dung ball beneath two planetarium sky panels: under a full star field it keeps course; with the Milky Way masked but other stars visible, it loses its bearing. A final sequence shows the beetle climbing onto the ball and turning to check the sky before continuing.

QZ reports that African dung beetles (*Scarabaeus satyrus*) kept their bearing under a full star field but lost it when the Milky Way was masked, even with other stars still visible. The article says a beetle climbs onto its dung ball and turns to check its direction against the sky before continuing.
