The Rise of Algae Biofuels in Aviation

Could algae help power future flights? Microalgae are tiny organisms that can produce oil for aviation fuel, and this story explains both their promise and the barrier standing in the way. In autotrophic cultivation, algae use sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow. Other approaches include heterotrophic cultivation, engineered photobioreactors, co-cultivation with bacteria or fungi, and growth in wastewater. Microalgae can grow rapidly, do not require arable land, and may produce substantial amounts of oil. Their biomass can also support fuel-making routes such as hydrothermal liquefaction and hydro-processed esters and fatty acids. But cultivation and harvesting costs remain the main commercialization barrier. The challenge is producing enough biomass and oil cheaply enough for aviation. A documented Continental Airlines test put these ideas into an operating aircraft. During a two-hour Boeing 737-800 flight, one engine used a blend that was 50 percent petroleum-based jet fuel and 50 percent synthetic biofuel. That does not mean the fuel was half algae. Algae oil made up just 2.5 percent of the total fuel, while Jatropha made up most of the remainder. The test showed engine operation, fuel performance, lower smoke, and that algae and Jatropha feedstocks could be mixed without a separate tank. Earlier Air New Zealand and Virgin Atlantic demonstrations are also reported, but the available evidence does not provide enough detail about their aircraft, blend ratios, or measurements. The takeaway is clear: algae fuel has flown in a test, but lower-cost production is still needed before commercial readiness can be claimed.
