How a Grass Seed Plants Itself

In Cooke’s Victorian account, the grass seed bears a long, feathered awn with a tightly twisted lower section and a sharp point below. Falling seeds often landed point-first, while the feather could catch among low plants and its hairs help hold the seed in place[1].
The awn is hygroscopic, meaning that it moves in response to changes in moisture. When wetted, its lower part untwists; as it dries, it twists again. If the feathered end is caught, these repeated movements rotate the seed instead, working its pointed end into soil or leaf litter[2].
Cooke presents this as an experimental finding: penetration occurred during both untwisting and retwisting, gradually covering the seed. In one reported observation, a seed left outdoors for eight days buried itself about 31 millimetres, nearly twice its own length, and pierced a piece of rotten leaf along the way[3].
