Pocket voice recorders for ideas, interviews and field sound

Capture quick ideas, flexible room sound, or a multi-input session.

Zoom’s Essential handheld recorders record in 32-bit float but differ in how they pick up sound. Zoom H1essential is a simple two-track stereo recorder, Zoom H2essential uses a multi-mic arrangement with selectable patterns, and Zoom H4essential adds two XLR/TRS inputs for a four-track session. A better recorder will not fix poor microphone placement.

What to check before buying

Pick Zoom H1essential for voice notes and quick stereo capture, Zoom H2essential to experiment with where room sound comes from, or Zoom H4essential when external microphones and separate tracks matter. Confirm the memory-card and battery requirements, supported recording formats and any accessories you need before checkout.

For an interview, obtain consent and follow local recording rules. Carry spare power and test levels and storage before an important take.
