How Is Educational Mismatch Measured in Iceland?

Q1. What does Iceland’s educational mismatch rate measure?
- Differences in educational attainment between employed people and comparison groups
- The percentage of workers who changed jobs during a quarter
- The number of people enrolled in tertiary education
- The average number of years spent in school
Answer: Differences in educational attainment between employed people and comparison groups. Explanation: The measure compares educational distributions, estimating how much of a comparison group would need to increase its attainment to match employed people. It does not prove that obtaining additional education causes employment.
Q2. Which three educational-attainment groups are used in the measure?
- Compulsory, upper-secondary, and tertiary education
- Primary, vocational, and doctoral education
- Basic, professional, and research education
- Lower-secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate education
Answer: Compulsory, upper-secondary, and tertiary education. Explanation: These groups organize the distributions being compared. The measure does not prove that moving into a higher group causes employment.
Q3. Which ISMENNT2011 level range represents tertiary education?
- Levels 1–2
- Levels 3–4
- Levels 5–8
- Levels 9–10
Answer: Levels 5–8. Explanation: Educational mismatch compares the distributions across attainment groups, including tertiary education. This comparison does not establish that additional education causes employment.
Q4. Under the labour-force classifications used by the survey, who is unemployed?
- People aged 16–74 who are not employed, currently available for work, and actively seeking work or starting a found job within at most three months
- Anyone aged 16 or older who is not currently studying
- People who worked at least one hour for pay during the reference week
- People who do not meet the conditions for either employment or unemployment
Answer: People aged 16–74 who are not employed, currently available for work, and actively seeking work or starting a found job within at most three months. Explanation: The mismatch rate compares the educational distribution of unemployed people with that of employed people. It does not show that additional education would cause a person to become employed.
Q5. Who is classified as outside the labour force?
- People who do not meet the conditions for being employed or unemployed
- People who worked at least one hour for family gain during the reference week
- People aged 16–74 who actively sought work
- People with tertiary education who are not employed
Answer: People who do not meet the conditions for being employed or unemployed. Explanation: This group’s educational distribution can be compared with the distribution among employed people. Such a comparison does not prove that additional education causes employment.
Q6. What was the reported educational mismatch rate for unemployed women and men in Iceland in the third quarter of 2020?
- Women 20.2% and men 8.2%
- Women 8.2% and men 20.2%
- Women 29.6% and men 12.8%
- Women 12.8% and men 8.2%
Answer: Women 20.2% and men 8.2%. Explanation: The figures describe a difference between the educational distributions of employed and unemployed people by sex. They do not prove that additional education causes employment.
