How did Euby Brand escape?

Ruby Brand escapes the press-gang on multiple occasions. He is seen leaving town by the lieutenant and is pursued^[1]. The lieutenant summons his men, but Ruby is strong and fast. Ruby runs to Minnie, but hears the gang approaching^[1]. Ruby leaps off a cliff about fifty feet into the sea^[1]. Ruby is a practiced swimmer, so he swims along the rocks to a cavern with a small hole where he climbs to the top^[1].

Ruby encounters Balls, a sleeping seaman, and after a brief fight Euby flees towards Arbroath^[1]. Later, Ruby encounters the press-gang again, but leaps up an 'almost perpendicular wall of earth,' jumps on the nearest sailor, then punches the lieutenant^[1]. Despite Minnie's pleas, Ruby refuses to leave her, but kisses her hand and smoothing her golden hair as he evades capture and runs towards Arbroath^[1].
